Scion is a New Zealand government research institute that provides technical and scientific capability in forestry, wood products and bioproducts research and development with a high-value manufacturing focus.

Novel ways of using wood and plant fibres is the focus of Scion’s manufacturing and biobased materials/chemicals science disciplines, which include:

  • wood modification

  • pulp and paper testing
  • biorefinery technologies (including bioenergy and biofuels, polymers and composites, packaging, chemical synthesis and design, industrial biotechnology)
  • clean technologies.

Formerly the NZ Forest Research Institute, Scion employs approximately 300 people and has its head office in Rotorua.
